Chaos

Drawing connections between chaos theory and the photographic medium, this is an exploration of disorder and unrest that constantly surrounds us. Climate breakdown as well as the current political landscape have pervaded our consciousness and yet seem increasingly beyond our control. In this piece, Maxwell-Davis questions the illusion of our mastery over our environment.

Notes from Curator

Nature and its overwhelming force can’t be more expressed than the veracity of the sea and its power to make us feel both small and mighty. Chaos, work by Joy Maxwell-Davis, is a somewhat departure for the artist, with her past works centering around personal histories and family archives. This piece, although working in the same destructive aesthetic, questions our warped perception of our environment and the way we deem to control it, inherently underestimating its power. In a time of political unrest and global warming reshaping our environment. With its armor-like presents battles a new path for Joy and leaves the viewer to ponder their own understanding of our world. Are we in Chaos or under control?
