Isabel Merchante (Madrid, 1999)Lives and works between London and Madrid
Through her artistic practice, Isabel Merchante establishes a dialogue with the spaces she inhabits and those that, due to their material, dreamlike or fictitious condition, she cannot reach. She conceives art as an opportunity to open windows to unsuspected places, to create paths, thresholds, and latent possibilities, where poetry and science can cohabit, from traditional plastic creation to artificial intelligence. In each artwork, Isabel proposes a way of perceiving that makes us aware of the impossible knowledge of ourselves and our environment. Isabel moves in the weightlessness of a world that expands to infinite dimensions and spaces, materialising her works as experiences, often ephemeral, that leave a trace in the memory of those who witness them and a seed that germinates in successive projects. - Almudena Lobera
Notes from Curator
When we first encountered Isabel's work, we were immediately struck by her ability to transform space and craft immersive environments. Her artistic approach invites viewers into a deeper connection with the natural world, drawing attention to its' unseen intricacies. Through a masterful blend of light, mathematics, and the human experience of space, Isabel's work forms a bridge between art and nature, offering an invitation to discover the delicate interplay between the organic and the abstract.
The series Rainbow Drawings, created with flame and UV light on stainless steel, explores the mathematics of natural phonomena and the gap between analog and digital representation. It suggests that even it something is "explained", it can never be fully captured, much like the light, reflected on the metal surface, which emerges and changes every time.
